Florence
and Woodward Have a Conversation Reviewing the Corporate Cost of Conflict. This is a great addition to this page we
have dedicated to Billy Florences insights about business and life.
Billy Florence & Orrin Woodward
Billy Florence: Conflict in the workplace has a measurable dollar impact. Conflict is also predictable effect of putting people with differing
needs, interests, and goals in the same work space. It’s important that
conflicts be recognized and dealt with instead of being ignored. Orrin Woodward has experience in working with people from
established large corporation to the smallest start up. We’re going
to discuss the corporate cost of conflict.
Orrin Woodward: Great idea, Billy. The American Management Association conducted a study of executives and mangers and asked them how much
time they were spending dealing with conflicts.
Billy Florence: What did they say, Orrin? Was it an hour
a day? If a manager or executive is loosing an hour of productive time each that
obviously translates to the bottom line.
Orrin Woodward: An hour would be an improvement for most of them. They reported spending 24 percent of their time dealing
with conflicts.
Billy Florence: Let’s do
the math of that one, Orrin.
Orrin Woodward: Let’s say it’s a medium-sized
business with 90 managers and let’s the average annual salary across the group is $45,000.
Billy Florence: Sounds good. That’s 90 x $45,000
= $4,050,000
Orrin Woodward: Billy, if 25 percent
of the manager’s time is taking up with handling conflict issues, that’s more than a million dollar impact.
Billy Florence: And then we’d have to add in the
lost time of the employees involved in the conflict and their lowered productivity.
Orrin
Woodward: That’s an excellent idea for the next article, Billy. How about discussing the intangible impact and causes of workplace conflict?
Billy Florence: Will do, Orrin.

A Happy Birthday Wish for Rich DeVos: A Business Legend,
An Author, and Philanthropist - This is a wonderful view of such
an American Legend. Mr. DeVos has surly excelled in each facet of his life and because of this, we have all benefited
Billy Florence: Dexter Yager
and I have pleasure to know and work with Rich DeVos for a number of years. Dexter,
Rich is a Grand Rapids native, right?
Dexter Yager: True, Billy.
Rich (Richard M) DeVos was born March 4, 1926, in Grand Rapids,
Mich. He attended Calvin
College in Grand Rapids
and married a Grand Rapids girl. Billy, did you know that Rich is a veteran?
Billy Florence: Yes, Dexter,
I do remember that. Rich and I served in the same branch of service. Rich served in the US Air Force from 1944 to 1946. My service was begun several decades later. Rich has a birthday coming up. Believe he’ll be 81.
Dex, I was recently reading Pat Williams book about Rich, “How to Be
like Rich DeVos, and saw your insightful comment about building a business from the beginning.
Dexter Yager: Rich and
Jay built their business from scratch. They did it the hard way. They know what it’s like to be poor. It’s impossible
to replace that experience. That’s what I did, too, and that’s what I told Pat in his book.
Billy Florence: Speaking of experience. Rich shares many of his experiences
in his three books. Did you have a favorite?
Dexter Yager: I’ve enjoyed all three of the books Rich has written: BELIEVE!, Compassionate Capitalism and Hope From My Heart: Ten Lessons for Life. It
would be hard to pick a favorite.
Billy Florence: Dex, my
favorite might be the most recent one, Hope From My Heart . It describes the life-changing experience of Rich’s heart
transplant at age 71, and imparts ten lessons for life.
Dexter: Good point, Billy. The life lessons in this book are important at any life stage. Rich covers subjects like persistence, confidence,
optimism, respect and faith.

Billy Florence: Leadership Strategy: Lesson of the Bucket
by
Billy Florence
Have you identified your "bucket brigade?”
The bucket brigade concept addresses the importance of a developing the art of a planned “leadership
leak.” And it was once explained to me by my friend, John Maxwell.
The longer an organization has gone without major change, the harder it is for them to make changes. It is like working out at the gym. Without regular exercise, the change muscles aren’t
fit, strong, and ready to respond positively.
Change no longer resides the individuals’ muscle memory.
Change is not just like “riding a bike" for them because they can’t remember what the good result after
having experienced ‘change pain’ felt like.
Leaking leadership to your organization’s key influences before a major meeting to discuss change, might
help the process begin.
John teaches that all leaders walk around all the times with a bucket in each hand. One contains water and the other contains gasoline. When ever
there is a ‘little fire’ of contention in the organization – – the key influencers are usually the
first to hear about it.
Option
One: GAS - Arrive at the scene of small sparks and choose the bucket of gasoline. Apply directly and the results
will be a major fire.
Option
Two: WATER - Arrive at the scene of small sparks and choose the bucket
of water. Apply directly, and the problem has been extinguished.
Leading out loud lesson: Key influencers in an organization are either the leader’s greatest
asset of greatest liability.

Billy Florence:Reviews – The Go-Getterby Billy Florence
The Go-Getter: A Story
that Tells You How to Be One – by Peter B. Kyne, with Alan Axelrod
A humorous and fast-paced story on how to
be successful in business and life.
FROM BILLY FLORENCE: In a time when we have many more “starters” than
“finishers”, this brief story shows how a habit of “going the extra mile – and keeping commitments
can make a person stand out in any crowd.
FROM THE PUBLISHER : Ever since its first printing by William Randolph Hearst
in 1921, The Go-Getter has inspired employees and entrepreneurs to take initiative, increase their productivity, and excel
against the odds. Now, more than half a million copies later, Alan Axelrod, bestselling author of Patton on Leadership and
Elizabeth I, CEO, updates the tale to address today's most pressing work and business issues.
In The Go-Getter, Bill
Peck, a war veteran, persuades Cappy Ricks, the influential founder of the Rick's Logging & Lumbering Company, to let
him prove himself by selling skunk wood in odd lengths-a job that everyone knows can only lead to failure. When Peck goes
on to beat his quota, Rick hands Peck the ultimate opportunity and the ultimate test: the quest for an elusive blue vase.
Drawing on such classic values as honesty, determination, passion, and responsibility, Peck overcomes nearly insurmountable
obstacles to find the vase and launch his career as a successful manager.
In a time when jobs are tight and managers
are too busy for mentoring, here’s a way to maintain positive energy and prepare yourself to ace the tests that come
your way.
FROM PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY Although Kyne's tale of business smarts has been around for some time
(it was first published by William Randolph Hearst in 1921), it doesn't feel dated.
